Much Too Long

© Bruce Buttel and Beth Scholten Woodruff

Ridin' a bus into Boston
Rain is pourin' down
Skyline shimmers in the West
I think it's just about the saddest sight I've ever seen
I think my heart could use a rest
I think my heart could use a rest

It's a long road and emptiness that makes a spirit tire
It's a kind heart and tenderness that warms the soul like fire
It's a strong bound togetherness that makes a moment long
And it's our well-tried foreverness that's tried me much, much too long

The bus pulls off the highway
Rain flows through the streets
Traffic edies all a-round
Leavin a girl from New York, goin' to a girl from L.A.
And that rain keeps comin' down
And that rain keeps comin' down

It's a long road and emptiness that makes a spirit tire
It's a kind heart and tenderness that warms the soul like fire
It's a strong bound togetherness that makes a moment long
And it's our well-tried foreverness that's tried me much, much too long

I sit in a cold hotel room and watch the evening news
Can't understand a thing they say
I look at the telephone, I wish I were back in New York
Maybe I wish I could run away
Maybe I wish I could run away

It's a long road and emptiness that makes a spirit tire
It's a kind heart and tenderness that warms the soul like fire
It's a strong bound togetherness that makes a moment long
And it's our well-tried foreverness that's tried me much,
Yes it's tried me much, much too long.
